Junaluska
Moderately tart with a fruity flavor reminiscent of pineapple. Hard, moderately breaking texture. Original tree was supposedly owned by Chief Junaluskee, a Cherokee living in North Carolina. Junaluskee refused to give up the land on which the tree was growing when the state began buying Cherokee lands. He eventually sold the tree for $50. The variety was believed to be extinct until rediscovered in Macon County, North Carolina, by apple hunter Tom Brown. Unknown date of origin. Ripens in late October.
