Each tasting hike will include different varieties of apples and other seasonal fruits which are ready, so come to one, two, or all three events - it's up to you!
Hikes start at 9:30, 11:30, and 1:30 and will last approximately 90 minutes each.
Plan to arrive a few minutes early for check-in. Hikes start promptly.
You'll be able to shop before and/or after your tasting experience (the farm store will remain open until 3:30 on hiking days).
Meet at the Star Barn Market at NSO:
3232 Limestone Rd. Cochranville, PA 19330
Call 484-502-7360 if you need help finding us
Parking, walkways, buildings, and restrooms are all handicapped-accessible.
The farm itself is not handicapped accessible (walking only over grassy terrain: not wheelchair, walker, or stroller-friendly), so keep that in mind if you are considering attending this event.
The small group size (maximum 10 guests per hike) will provide a personalized and in-depth tour of the farm as well as tastings (straight off the trees!) of up to several dozen various seasonal fruits as you walk around with our fruit growing experts.
Along with tasting fruit including apples and (depending on ripeness at the time) pears, Asian pears, grapes, and plums, you'll learn about the origin and history of the varieties, experience (by taste) maturity and ripeness indicators, and get some general info about growing the various fruits. Interesting and often humorous anticdotes are sure to be shared as well from our various resident fruit geeks.
Please note: This is not a pick-your-own opportunity. Our farmer guide(s) will pick and offer for tasting the varieties which are appropriate for the day's hike. You'll likely get to taste 20 to 30 different varieties and different types of fruit.
Beverages, snacks, and restrooms are provided
Token(s) you can redeem for some favorite fruits of your choice after the hike
Hikes are appropriate for all ages, although small children may get bored.
What to Bring:
- A camera and your sense of adventure!
- Your own palate cleanser/snack if you are intolerant of wheat/pretzels (which are provided)
- A picnic lunch if you desire, and make a day or it
What NOT to Bring:
- Pets or other animals
- Additional guests without checking in with us ahead of time.
We will cancel due to weather only if we feel the conditions would make your visit unsafe or completely valueless, and will let you know the day before if we need to cancel. If only light rain is forecast, simply bring a raincoat and enjoy a real farm experience.
If your plans change, you may cancel your reservation up to 7 days prior to the date booked and receive a full refund. Any cancellations that occur less than 7 days prior to your reserved date will be refunded at 50%. Cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to your reserved date are not refundable (except due to weather conditions, noted above).
If your plans change and you simply need to modify your reservation date, time, or number of attendees, please contact us as soon as possible to try to make other arrangements.
If we need to cancel for any reason (weather-related or otherwise), we will work with you to either come up with an alternative date for your experience or will refund your registration fee in full.
Each hike will last about 90 minutes, allowing plenty of time to taste, chat, and ask questions.
Hikes are $20 per person over age 12, $5 per person aged 6-12, and free for ages 5 and under.
Note: Hikes are appropriate for all ages, although small children may get bored.
All reservations require full payment via credit card or PayPal at the time of booking the reservation online.
NSO is a working farm, and while we strive to provide as safe an environment as possible, we require your help in staying safe during your visit. Please:
- Adhere to all instructions and/or warnings the farm staff and/or farm signage provide.
- Review above suggestions on this webpage about what to wear and bring so you remain comfortable and safe.
The North Star Orchard farm staff reserve the right to cancel/stop your activity in progress if the above guidelines on this webpage are not adhered to. Our concern is for the safety and enjoyment of you and your group, our staff, and the farm itself. Refunds will not be issued if we need to stop your activity in this manner.
